Fright-day Foods: Bat's Blood Wine

Bats Blood Wine
About Bats Blood:

"Bats Blood is produced in Banat which is part of the historic region of Transylvania by one of Romanias finest wineries : Cremela Recas.

Legend has it that the Banat region of Romania was where Bacchus, the god of wine, spent his childhood – certainly the first records of viticulture date back to the Roman Empire when it invaded and annexed the central part of Dacia in 106 AD.

This region west of Romania, surrounding the city of Timisoara, is the home of our multi award winning producers Cremela Recaş. The vineyard areas and wine region have both benefited from centuries of influence from Hungarian, Bavarian and Austrian immigrants – all laying claim to have influenced the present day viticulture.

Recaş is now a 700ha modern day winery, exporting to major wine buyers throughout Europe and the Americas. It has a Mediterranean climate, cooler than the rest of Romania, and dryer with a longer harvest season, allowing many varieties to ripen easily."
Being a sucker (pun intended) for items like this, I decided to buy a bottle of Bats Blood last year. I'd love to tell you that it has a wonderful flavour and has a delightful aroma, but actually I don't drink (...wine!). It does, however, look pretty on my shelf and the coffin box it comes in is quite lovely.

29th: Food: Spider & Bat Cupcakes

As I mentioned in a previous post, they have chocolate bats at Sainsbury's this year. So when I also got this bat cupcake decorating set (above) from Asda, I decided to combine the two and make some spooky cupcakes (below)!

They're really simple, so I didn't do a proper tutorial about them. Just use whichever cupcake recipe you prefer and, once cooked, then leave them to cool.

Following that, ice them all, put a bat-topped cocktail stick in and spider chocolate on each one and you're done! :)

17th: Halloween Food - Chocolate Spiders

This year spiders seem to be everywhere for Halloween - even the food is full of them! Sainsbury's have some milk & white chocolate spiders (okay for vegetarians too, but sadly, no dark chocolate for vegans).

They come in packs of 12 and are each about 2cm long. I think they'd be great at parties or as a spooky surprise for someone!

6th: Art / Creepy Candy - Cryptocurium

Giant Chocolate Cthulhu Idol by Cryptocurium
While perusing the blogs I follow here on Blogger, I came across a post by Haunted Design House that featured some amazing lollipops by Cryptocurium (you can see some of them below).

Deep Ones by Cryptocurium
Their website describes Cryptocurium as:

...a New Jersey based custom artwork, chocolate and candy maker
committed to producing “handmade and edible art” of the highest quality.
Utilizing legends and lore, stories and the  Lovecraft Mythos, CRYPTOCURIUM transforms
the strange and the macabre into limited edition artwork and terrifying treats for your enjoyment.

Cthulhu Cultist Medallion art piece by Cryptocurium
It makes sense that they're also artists, as each piece of confection - from Cthulhu lollipops to absinthe skulls to edible vampire hunter kits - is an artwork in itself! Many are based on Lovecraftian mythos, but there are also things like chocolate skulls, sacrificial hearts and Vlad the Impaler lollipops too.

Edible Vampire Hunter Kit by Cryptocurium
Oh, and given the time of year, I should also mention that Cryptocurium produce gummy sweets as well; some with a Halloween theme *hint hint*. If the items they have aren't quite what you're looking for, don't worry! There's an option to contact them about custom work too.

Fright-Day Foods: Purple Glitter Skull Cake

Last month, for a friend's birthday, I decided to take the opportunity to use a new skull-shaped pan I had and make him a spooky cake! Since I know some of you like to bake, I thought I'd share the incredibly simple decoration details with you here. It's just a vanilla sponge cake (I made other bits of the cake too, but they weren't horror-esque), so I haven't included a recipe below, only decoration instructions.

A-Z Challenge: N is for...Nomskulls

N is for...Nomskulls

Nomskulls, made by Fred, are "kooky creepy" skull-shaped silicone cupcake molds and just happen to be the focus of today's A-Z post! My sister gave me a set of these last September, but I only got around to using them last night. According to the box you can:

"Knock 'em dead with these four stylish silicone skulls. Nomskulls are ready to fill with your favorite grey batter and bake into perfect cupcake craniums. One bite and you'll be head over heels, because there's no doubt about it - this skull bone's connected to the YUM bone!"

For some reason known only to my brain, I forgot that I was making skull-cakes and decided to make the mixture red. The molds are fairly huge but don't make too much batter, as they will overflow if you don't leave the top inch or so free. Of course, it depends entirely on what kind of mix you make and how much you expect it to rise though.

So that's 3 brain-spills and 1 fancy hairstyle at the back...

However, despite the overflow setbacks, the good thing about the molds being silicone is that any spills come off really easily and the contained cupcake slides out equally as well when you're done.

Unfortunately, the inside of the mold is completely smooth (see photo above) except for the eye imprints, which means that the cakes will come out looking like zombies and aliens unless you decorate them.

I'm fairly sure that they were intended to be served only inside the molds rather than out of them. It doesn't matter that much though, as the flat tops are there to be adorned with iced brains!

If you do decide to take them out of the mold, you could try sugar skull-themed icing, zombies with eyeballs popping out, gas maks, Frankenstein's Monster...the list goes on. I think I'll experiment a little and make another post about the decoration when A-Z is over. (It might seem like I've caught up here, but the truth is I'm still missing J, K, L, and M.)

To be continued....in May

Vampire's Day Soiree- Part 2: Valentine Vampire Cake

In honour of today being February 14th, HSL is taking part in the Vampire's Day Soiree, being run by Holly at Holly's Horrorland! So, instead of cheesy, sickly sweet, love-themed posts, you'll be getting some amazing, blood-drenched, vampire posts. Okay, so the posts here will probably be just as cheesy, but I'm sure some of the other participants will be able to give you something a little more sophisticated and refined ;) You'll find a list of the other participants and links to their blogs at the end of each Vampire's Day post here. That done with, on with part 2 of the sanguinary fun!

Part 2: Vampire-themed Cake

How to make this bloody cake!

You will need:

- 1 large rectangular sponge cake
- 2 small rectangular sponge cakes (I made mine, but you can always buy them if you want to)
- Fondant icing or marzipan
- Red and black food colouring
- Chocolate hearts
- Designer icing in red, or chocolate icing
- Sugar skull and spiderweb decorations
- Pastry brush / paintbrush

Cover the large cake with fondant icing to form the base

Using the red food colouring, paint the entire base with the pastry brush. Then apply streaks of black to create the effect above. The colouring will make the cake shiny while wet, but it is more matt when completely dry.

Cut the two smaller cakes into coffin-shaped cakes and stick them next to each other onto the base using the chocolate icing. Paint the top with more red colouring.

Using the fondant icing, make the shapes for the vampire, coffin edging, and lips. Paint them as desired and add some chocolate hearts in the empty side of the coffin. Don't worry if your vampire looks like a cross between a penguin and Ernest the Vampire. Mine did too! :D

Add some fondant teeth and bloody fangs to the mouth and then add the chocolate icing heart, topped with white chocolate decorations and sugar skulls / spiderweb decorations wherever you want them.

And you're done!

I don't have a photo of it after it dried, but I think the gross, oozy, shiny blood look kind of works with this theme ;)

Food & Drink: Spooky Cupcakes from The Fabulous Bakin' Boys

Over the past few days, there's been a veil of mist shrouding my house, the graveyard near it and everything else my eyes can spy through the panes. This morning it officially transformed itself into a fog, and the town into something like an eerie scene from Silent Hill along with it. That, of course, can only mean one thing... Pyramid Head is coming for me my favourite time of year is here and Halloween is fast approaching too! The time of spooks, scares, devils, the dead, wicked little fiends and..trick or treating.

Naturally, as the name of the act implies, it's only nice to give the threatening, sweet-addicted hordes some form of sugary treats, for banging on your door at night, in their most beautiful guises of the year. Of course, you could give them regular Halloween candy, which I'm sure they would love, but alternatively you could provide them with something not entirely consisting of sugar.

That, my undead friends, is where the object of this post comes in. You may remember that just over a week ago I posted about The Fabulous Bakin' Boys Spooky Flapjack Fingers, from last Halloween. Well, as it happens, they have come out with a new range of Halloween goodies this year - Spooky Cupcakes - and they've been kind enough to send us two boxes of them to review. (Yes, we got them for free, but I assure you, if we don't like them we'll say so!)

The cupcakes come in two types - Blackcurrant 'N Apple and Choc 'N Blood Orange - both of which are suitable for vegetarians. I think perhaps the Blackcurrant 'N Apple would have been better if it'd had a more corny, Halloween name too, but it's not really important.
"Consisting of two layers, a chocolate or apple flavoured sponge with a fruity blackcurrant or blood orange toppin', the spooky treats contain only natural colours and flavours and are baked in a nut-free bakery."
The packaging is very creepy-cute, with vampire bats, spooky castles, gravestones, witches, crazy cats and spiders on them, and I do appreciate it when it seems as though a company has actually put some effort into box designs, especially during Halloween. The back of the packaging mainly explains the Halloween contest that The Fabulous Bakin' Boys are running  this month, which we'll get to later. The back also provides various contact links and manufacturer locations, whilst all the nutritional information is given on the side panels.

The cakes themselves are not as interesting-looking as the packaging and, once removed from the wrappers, are rather like other generic cupcakes. Even just adding a small decoration or spiderweb pattern to the top of each one would have been enough to give them a spooky look. This doesn't really matter if you're giving them out to trick or treaters, but if you want them as unwrapped treats on a party table, you might want to add something to them first. However, the icing colours are considerably brighter that most store-bought cakes, which does give them a somewhat cutesy, Halloween feel.

The Apple 'N Blackcurrant frosting is very creamy and fruity, which I liked a lot. I couldn't taste much of the apple flavour in the cake, but it was still a good fusion of tastes. I don't like choc-orange flavoured food, so I only tried one little piece of a Choc 'N Blood Orange cake. It did taste very much like chocolate orange and the icing had an equally good fruity/creamy combination. Madame Luciel did the real taste testing though, and assures me that if you like choc-orange, you'll think these are yummy!

Another feature of the cupcakes that makes them ideal for trick or treaters is that they are all individually packaged, which means no sticky fingers (at YOUR house anyway) and no accusations of poisoning the local kiddies...heh. However, this is also where we come back to the "Trick before you Treat" competition! On each wrapper, there is a challange; "Can you hold a cupcake on your nose for 10 seconds", "How many cupcakes can you juggle?" etc.  If you attempt one of the "tricks" stated, and have someone photograph you doing it, you can then submit the picture to the Facebook contest page. I tried a few, and failed miserably! (So no photos :P) See if you can do any better!

Fright-day Foods: Halloween Cake Bars & A Bug Casket Cake

It could be the jack o' lanterns in the window. It could be the various disgusting decorations on the door. It could be the vile zombie/blood soaked/stitched together hostess that greets them at the door. It could be the eerie music floating over the windy October air. I don't know the reason, but the trick or treaters venture to my house on Halloween each year. So, as I like to be sociable for one out of 365 days, those who bother to dress up receive some sort of sugary placation. Below is a photograph of some of the "treats" I gave out last year. There were also candies on offer, but these cake bars and mini rolls from Cadbury seemed most popular...

The cake bars were also the right size to make a casket for the top of a cake I made last year. There are no how-to guide photos unfortunately, but I can tell you what it's made of.

The cake is a basic chocolate sponge cake recipe, he casket in the centre is a Cinder Toffee cake bar decorated with icing, the bugs are almonds painted with food colouring and detailed with icing, and the maggots are cashew nuts with icing lines on them. Very simple and fun to make. I did rush it, so it wasn't the neatest thing I've ever produced, but then again, for Halloween, I don't think it has to be!

Fright-day Foods: Spooky Flapjack Fingers

This week, as well as posting a spooky food tutorial for Fright-day Foods, I thought I'd also post some creepy confectionery that I bought/was bought for me last year (no, I don't get Halloween gifts, but when people see Halloween/horror things, they feel the urge to get it for me apparently, heehee). The first item is Spooky Flapjack Fingers from The Fabulous Bakin' Boys. Being quite honest, the "spookiest" thing about these is the packaging, because the actual product is essentially just finger-shaped flapjacks with jam in the middle. I don't know what else I was expecting really...actual bloody fingers.

These were one of the gifts I received last year, so I don't know how much they cost, sorry. I think they were purchased in Sainsbury's though, so perhaps they'll have them again this year. I am glad they at least made the effort to put out a Halloween product, complete with spooky rhyme, though. Whilst those of you in the US might be used to seeing a mass of Halloween fare in the shops each year, here in the UK there usually isn't much, so anything like this still makes me smile!
