A-Z Challenge: Q is for...Queen of Blood!

Q is for...Queen of Blood
Sometimes also listed as 'Planet of Blood', 'Queen of Blood' is a 1966 sci-fi horror film directed by Curtis Harrington and starring John Saxon, Judi Meredith, Basil Rathbone, Florence Marly and Dennis Hopper. It's set in 1990, which although is now 22 years in the past, was 34 years in the future at the time of the film's release!

Florence Marly as the alien in 'Queen of Blood'
Scientists receive a distress call from an alien ship that has crash landed on Mars and a rescue party are sent from Earth to assist them. A sole survivor is rescued and taken on board the ship. However, those on board realise something is wrong when, after unsuccessfully trying to feed the alien, the crew member assigned to guard her is found dead. The alien had eaten blood / flesh after hypnotising him!

They then try to get home in one piece as quickly as they can, before the extraterrestrial vampire has the chance to claim another victim. Will they survive?

The plot alone might not convince you to watch 'Queen of Blood', but how can you resist tag lines like:

"A deathless witch, who devours men, turns the Milky Way into a galaxy of gore!"
"From planets yet unknown comes out of this world HORROR!"
"Hideous beyond belief...with an inhuman craving!"

Vampire's Day Soiree- Part 2: Valentine Vampire Cake

In honour of today being February 14th, HSL is taking part in the Vampire's Day Soiree, being run by Holly at Holly's Horrorland! So, instead of cheesy, sickly sweet, love-themed posts, you'll be getting some amazing, blood-drenched, vampire posts. Okay, so the posts here will probably be just as cheesy, but I'm sure some of the other participants will be able to give you something a little more sophisticated and refined ;) You'll find a list of the other participants and links to their blogs at the end of each Vampire's Day post here. That done with, on with part 2 of the sanguinary fun!

Part 2: Vampire-themed Cake

How to make this bloody cake!

You will need:

- 1 large rectangular sponge cake
- 2 small rectangular sponge cakes (I made mine, but you can always buy them if you want to)
- Fondant icing or marzipan
- Red and black food colouring
- Chocolate hearts
- Designer icing in red, or chocolate icing
- Sugar skull and spiderweb decorations
- Pastry brush / paintbrush

Cover the large cake with fondant icing to form the base

Using the red food colouring, paint the entire base with the pastry brush. Then apply streaks of black to create the effect above. The colouring will make the cake shiny while wet, but it is more matt when completely dry.

Cut the two smaller cakes into coffin-shaped cakes and stick them next to each other onto the base using the chocolate icing. Paint the top with more red colouring.

Using the fondant icing, make the shapes for the vampire, coffin edging, and lips. Paint them as desired and add some chocolate hearts in the empty side of the coffin. Don't worry if your vampire looks like a cross between a penguin and Ernest the Vampire. Mine did too! :D

Add some fondant teeth and bloody fangs to the mouth and then add the chocolate icing heart, topped with white chocolate decorations and sugar skulls / spiderweb decorations wherever you want them.

And you're done!

I don't have a photo of it after it dried, but I think the gross, oozy, shiny blood look kind of works with this theme ;)

Vampire's Day Soiree - Part 1: 5 Vampire Verses

Vampire's Day Soiree

Part 1: Vampire-themed Poems, Verses and Rhymes

A random selection of poems, verses and rhymes about blood-suckers.
Some are serious, some are silly, but all feature vampires and are relatively short.
Der Vampir
My dear young maiden clingeth
Unbending, fast and firm
To all the long-held teaching
Of a mother ever true;
As in vampires unmortal 5
Folk on the Theyse's portal
Heyduck-like do believe.
But my Christine thou dost dally,
And wilt my loving parry
Till I myself avenging
To a vampire's health a-drinking
Him toast in pale tokay.
And as softly thou art sleeping
To thee shall I come creeping
And thy life's blood drain away.
And so shalt thou be trembling
For thus shall I be kissing
And death's threshold thou' it be crossing
With fear, in my cold arms.
And last shall I thee question
Compared to such instruction
What are a mother's charms?
- Heinrich August Ossenfelder

The Tale of the Hungry Vampire
Biting a neck isn’t all that much fun
It’s messy, it’s crude, and it leads to the shun-
ning of most folk
when you really crave Coke
And honey and cake
Fangs are a mistake
On chocolate I brood
I’m not in the mood
For more dark thick blood
Masquerading as food
- Brenda McKenna

Untitled
The vampire said: "My name is mud
Because I have a taste for blood
And there are those who think I'm horrid
For nipping victims on the forehead.
But, on this matter I won't hedge.
What really sets my teeth on edge
And scares me even more than rabies
Are children biting jelly babies."
Max Fatchen

Technically, the next one isn't about vampires, but...imagine that it is and it still makes sense :P

Come to Me
Come to me my little dearie,
Come to me my little child,
Do not sleep but lift your weary
Head and hark to me a while.
Look, my lovely, look, my treasure,
See, your granny's eyes grow dim.
This, dear, is no human pleasure -
Hold my hand, I'll take you in.
Can you see them, coldly waiting?
Drift and chill or breath and bone?
Dear, they move like silence skating
Past an icy, shivered moan.
Ah, my love, their red eyes brighten,
See, they like your sweet red cheeks...
The seem, you say, rather hungry?
Treasure, they've been starved for weeks!
Now they drift like smoke towards you,
Now they fasten to your skin,
Child, your manners, I should warn you,
No complaints when the teeth go in!
There now, it was all quite simple,
Over now, my deathless dear.
Sweet, your cheeks acquired a dimple,
Those fangs, now, what a charming sneer!
- Verity Laughton

Le Vampire
You who, like the stab of a knife,
Entered my plaintive heart;
You who, strong as a herd
Of demons, came, ardent and adorned,
To make your bed and your domain
Of my humiliated mind
— Infamous bitch to whom I’m bound
Like the convict to his chain,
Like the stubborn gambler to the game,
Like the drunkard to his wine,
Like the maggots to the corpse,
— Accurst, accurst be you!
I begged the swift poniard
To gain for me my liberty,
I asked perfidious poison
To give aid to my cowardice.
Alas! both poison and the knife
Contemptuously said to me:
“You do not deserve to be freed
From your accursed slavery,
Fool! — if from her domination
Our efforts could deliver you,
Your kisses would resuscitate
The cadaver of your vampire!”
- Charles Baudelaire

If you're in a creative mood, feel free to comment with your own rhymes about the children of the night!

Others Participating in the Vampire's Day Soiree:

Movies: Perfect Creature (2006)

Sci-fi vampire horror, ‘Perfect Creature’, from writer/director Glenn Standring, is set in an alternate reality New Zealand (Nuovo Zelandia), in which vampires and humans have co-existed peacefully for 300 years. That is, until someone who threatens all of this is born. I love vampire films, but I’ll be the first to admit that this one didn’t sound too promising on the surface. I gave it a chance though and was pleasantly surprised by the storyline, which was actually a reasonably original take on the sub-genre.

300 years ago, through some sort of genetic mutation, some male children began to be born as vampires. Due to their superhuman abilities and hugely long lifespan (over the 300 years, no vampire has died) they were seen as more perfect versions of human beings and highly revered as beings who are ‘closer to god’. Since that time, they became known as ‘Brothers’ and formed a church, which their human devotees attend.

Although the vampires of this world do not prey on humans, they still require blood and so willing volunteers donate it for the Brothers to consume. It’s an organization similar to the Catholic Church, where people donate money, receive guidance and confess their sins to the priests. Oh, and the Brothers also withhold masses of information from humans and forbid things such as research into genetics in order to maintain their power and encourage dependency.

Regardless of this peace, the Brothers still seek to make a ‘perfect creature’ that is half human, half vampire and continue to conduct genetic research secretly. Unfortunately, every attempt they make ends in either death of the newborn or a virus that causes them to go insane being present. When the half-vampire, half-human, so-called “perfect creature” Edgar (Leo Gregory) is finally born, it appears that he does not have the virus and is raised by the Brotherhood. However, as he grows up it becomes apparent that he too is infected, and he goes onto attack and kill people in an effort to start a war and stop Brothers from “serving” humans. Edgar’s biological brother, Brother Silas (Dougray Scott), and Lilly (Saffron Burrows), a human detective, team up and try to stop him.

The movie’s main plot makes a refreshing change from the “sexy vampire” and “vampire with a soul” storylines that have been made and remade countless times over the years. It also seems to cross over into the serial killer sub-genre too, which is much more appealing than the action or romance crossovers that have previously been offered. For example, Edgar always kills women and gives Silas various clues as to his whereabouts and the location of his next murder, in order to both assist his own capture and taunt Silas. There are also action and romance scenes in the movie, but they aren’t the main focus.

The setting of the movie is also really interesting, combining scenery, props, transport and costumes from Victorian England and the 1920’s-1960’s with modern and futuristic technology, architecture and clothing. There’s something of a Steampunk element to the cityscapes, which are further enhanced by the long, wide angle shots consisting of CGI mixed with real footage. This random mixture makes the film’s look rather unusual and unique and it really does seem like an alternate, darker version of a place that already exists. The closest visual style to it in a film that I can think of is ‘Bladerunner’, but even that is somewhat different to Nuovo Zelandia.

The acting is generally quite good too and Dougray Scott gives a particularly strong performance as the unemotional and inquisitive Silas, which is contrasted by Leo Gregory’s portrayal of madness and violence in Edgar. This again makes their relationship seem more like a police officer and serial killer than siblings or vampire hunter and vampire. Saffron Burrows, is also quite decent, but is not that memorable in her role. That seems to be more due to the character she’s playing rather than any lack of ability on her part though. Lilly appears to swing between tough cop from the streets and vulnerable woman devastated by the loss of her child far too often, but I suppose that is a plausible character trait for a grieving mother.

There are, however, two things about ‘Perfect Creature’ that really drag it down. Firstly, the completely pointless sub-plot of Lilly and Silas falling in love. It adds nothing at all to the movie and just pads it out with unnecessary scenes. They may have been attempting to add some kind of ‘forbidden love’ element to the story (Brothers are not allowed to be romantically involved with anyone) in order to appeal to wome...audience members who might like that sort of thing. It certainly didn’t appeal to this audience member that it may or may not have been aimed at though. If anything, it detracted from the film and made Silas somewhat irritating when he was around Lilly or discussing her with others. It’s unfortunate, because until that point, there had been very few disappointing features to the film.

The other huge let down is the ending, which seems rushed and strange. There is a sudden shift of who the enemy is and a flurry of narration from Silas that’s only purpose seems to be to lead into a sequel. Even the production quality seems to deteriorate slightly and it takes on the feel of a pilot film for a series, rather than the stylish and atypical sci-fi / fantasy horror movie it had previously been. Were it not for this ending, it may even have been easier to overlook the irrelevant romance between the two main characters.

Whilst there were two rather substantial failings in ‘Perfect Creature’, for the most part, I did enjoy it. Although it probably won’t become remembered as one of the greatest films ever made, I appreciated Glenn Standring’s efforts to go in a different direction with a vampire movie and definitely recommend it to fans of sci-fi horror and modern bloodsuckers.

Movies: Tim Burton's Dark Shadows and Frankenweenie

Hello there my spooky kids!

Great news for every Tim Burton fan (and I include myself in there!).
We will get TWO new movies from this horror genius this year;
First one I'm going to talk about: Dark Shadows, and the release date is actually quite close, the 11th of May!
Among the cast, we find the usual names such as Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, and other not-so-usual but interesting ones such as Michelle Pfeiffer.
The movie's based on a TV show from the 60s and it's a vampire-related story.

The second one is "Frankenweenie", starring Winona Ryder, which will be released the 5th of October and tells us how Young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences. I'm pretty sure you're familiar with this one anyway since it's based on his old shorts... ;)

Don't know about you but I'm bloody excited about this!

Monster Monday - Jiang Shi, the Hopping Zombie Vampires

Today Madame Luciel and myself bring you...the Jiang Shi!

Still from 'Encounters of the Spooky Kind', via Aluajala's sampler video
Jiang Shi (Geung Si in Hong Kong) are supernatural beings from China. They are also called Kyunshii in Japan and Gangshi in Korea and are brought back from the dead for many different reasons, some of which include: improper death, suicide, trouble-making personalities in life and being raised from the dead by a necromancer.

Although Jiang Shi are somewhat similar to Western vampires and zombies in the respect that they are undead, can be in various stages of decomposition and hide in caves or coffins during the daylight hours, but rather than feasting on brains or blood, Jiang Shi breathe in the lifeforce (Qi / Chi) of their victims. Depending on how advanced their rotting was at the time of their resurrection, Jiang Shi differ in appearance; some are pale white with relatively in-tact bodies, whilst others have parts missing and a green moss growing on them.

Perhaps the most distinctive feature of the Jiang Shi however, is the way that they move. Big, jumping hops, with their arms outstretched like a zombie! This unusual movement is said to come from the difficulty the corpses have moving, due to the onset of rigor mortis (hence the meaning of their name "stiff corpse"). The clip below illustrates their movement very well, and is from the movie 'Encouters of the Spooky Kind' from Sammo Hung:

For a list of more movies with Jiang Shi-like creatures in, visit the Latarnia Forums. There is also a boss called Jiang Shi, in the Castlevania game series, which is also based on this mythology.

Books: A Field Guide to Monsters by Dave Elliott

A Field Guide to Monsters by Dave Elliott

'A Field Guide to Monsters', by Dave Elliott, C.J. Henderson, R. Allen Leider and...Abraham Van Helsing...was given to be by our very own sadOasis a few years ago and since then it has become one of my favourite "monster compilation" books. Its approach to writing about our beloved creeps and ghouls is to use factual data about various fictional characters, which is wonderful, as it really does come across as a "field guide".

138 monsters are included in the guide and, whilst there aren't many post-2000 creatures (so no Sadako, Kayako, Jigsaw, Human Centipede, House of 1000 Corpses etc.), the amount of information given on each page is stunning. Each monster has a page, except for those that have been in a ridiculous number of remakes and sequels, such as Dracula, Godzilla and Frankenstein's Monster, who get two. Within that single page however, the biography, height, weight, weaknesses, powers, behaviour, lethality, family, habitat, history, intelligence, size comparisons and photograph of  the featured creatures are all included.

The monsters each fit within one of seven categories, some of which are a little jumbled and similar, but generally you can find the ghoul you're looking for in the place you would expect it to be.

The categories:
  • Mutated Lizards, Fish and Dinosaurs (The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Anaconda etc.)
  • Mutated Men, Women, Animals and Insects (The Fly, The Invisible Man, Gorgons etc.)
  • Mutated Vegetables (Killer Tomatoes, Pods, Swamp Thing etc.)
  • Monster Men (Leatherface, Jack Torrance, Doctor Caligari etc.)
  • Manufactured Monsters (Frankenstein's Monster, Colossus, Hal 9000 etc.)
  • Supernatural Monsters (Zombies, Count Dracula, Countess Maria Zaleska etc.)
  • Monsters from the Beyond (Candyman, Creeper, Pinhead, Chucky etc.)

The whole book is very thorough, but tongue in cheek, making it both entertaining and informative at the same time. It would be a great introduction to the world of monsters for a budding fan of all things spooky, or an equally enjoyable read for those already familiar with the creatures of horror, science fiction and dark fantasy.

Videos: Slingshots vs. the Undead

Vampire Hunter Slingshot
What is your weapon of choice in the event of a zombie attack? The traditional shotgun? Genetically modified plants? Your own severed arm? Well, if you happen to be Joerg Sprave there's only one choice...A SLINGSHOT! Sprave's hobby is making and testing slingshots and he makes an array of videos on the subject for his YouTube channel, with help from his wife (and the occasional zombie).

In addition to his serious testing videos, Sprave occasionally makes more humorous creations too such as the Guillotine and Zombie Brain Smashing slingshots (for zombies) and a vampire hunting stake slingshot.

Movies: Dario Argento's Dracula 3D

Whilst reading through an on-set insight into upcoming gothic horror 'Dracula 3D', it occurred to me that I hadn't actually written anything about it being in production yet. So...for those of you that don't know, Dario Argento is currently working on a retelling of 'Dracula', in 3D!

Current scheduled release dates:
Hungary - 2012
Italy - 2012

(More to come I'm sure)

Lead Cast:
Dracula - Thomas Kretschmann
Abraham Van Helsing - Rutger Hauer
Lucy Westenra - Asia Argento
Mina Murray - Marta Gastini
Johnathan Harker - Unax Ugalde

For the aforementioned on-set article, head over to Shock Till You Drop to read Alan Jones' excellent account. It will give you a lot more information than I possibly could!

Whilst I'm intrigued to see what use they make of the stereoscopic 3D technology, to be honest, it's more the combination of Argento and the Dracula legend that makes this project so appealing to me. Although some of his works haven't been stunning, during his career Argento has created some amazing films, which more than make up for the others.

In addition to that, there's the issue of the multitude of 2D versions of 'Dracula' preceding this film. Really though, there are very few vampire storylines that you can't attribute to another source (a game, a novel, a play, another movie etc.) and, in my opinion, it's better to just acknowledge that you're re-doing something and try to make it in a fresh way rather than try to pretend otherwise. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the finished picture is like though.

Books : The Strain Trilogy, by Guillermo del Toro & Chuck Hogan

Hello there little monsters~!
Since someone on twitter requested book entries, and I had thought about this one for a long time, today I bring you a post about one of the last books I've read and truly enjoyed!
It's been cowritten by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan and its title is The Strain (Nocturna in Spanish) .

This is the first book of a vampire trilogy, that luckily, has nothing to do with these sparkling vampires that people seem to like nowadays...
In fact, the main vampire reminds me of the old ones like Nosferatu; that's what I call a real creature of the night!!!
Personal thoughts aside, I think you should all give it a try!
To sumarize it a little bit, the book begins with a plane landing at the airport but no-one gets out of it, there are no lights inside, and there's not a single noise either coming from the plane. All the doors and windows are locked. Then, the protagonist, Ephrain, goes to the crime scene to investigate the mysterious plane... and if you want to find about the rest, you will have to start reading :P!

To find out more about this trilogy, visit its official website http://www.thestraintrilogy.com/.
There you can also see the second book is already available for pre-order. It'll be released in September this year, and I personally can't wait for it!

If you've been looking for new quality vampire books, I guess this is your chance ;)!

Events: Horror/Creepy Tea Parties for Charity

'Terrifying Tea Party!' by Michelle Souliere

Okay, first of all I need to point out that if you've somehow found your way to this entry looking for something to do with politics, you should leave now, as this is absolutely not what you're looking for. However, if you're here looking for a way to host a fantastic and horror-themed tea party, whilst raising money for a worthy cause, then this is the place for you!

That out of the way, I should probably preface this by telling you that in addition to loving all things scary and strange, I also adore animals. So for that reason, I'm posting this entry. Between April 2nd and May 2nd 2011, UK animal charity, The Blue Cross, are holding fundraising tea party events across the country and are encouraging people to sign up and hold tea parties of their own. So why not make yours have a horror/zombie/Halloween etc. theme, and have some fun whilst raising money? If you're not in the UK, or would prefer to support a different cause, then all you have to do is send/give the money you raise to a charity or organisation that you would like to help.

Some theme ideas for your creepy tea party might include:

  • Horror - have an event with movie screenings, horror music, creepy horror villain-inspired food etc. You can make the theme horror in general, or pick a specific movie/series/book etc. to base it on. You could even get your guests to dress up as their favourite characters!
Skeleton Cake made by me
  • Halloween - use any Halloween decorations to make your venue look like it was October 31st all over again! Use cupcake holders with spooky designs,  creepy cake decorations, tableclothes with ghosts/bats/pumpkins printed on and eerie theme music to set the scene.
  • Zombies - get your gory brain props and special effects make-up out and transform yourself, your family and your friends into undead ghouls! if your event is indoors, you could show zombie movies or if it's outdoors, you could even organise a mini-zombie lurch to go with it!
  • Nosferatu
Vampires - this will vary depending on what kind of vampires you like; zombie-esque ones from traditional mythology, Nosferatu-esque vampires who aren't like zombies, but aren't quite like modern takes on them, gothic horror vampires like Bela Lugosi in Dracula or Christopher Lee in the early Hammer Dracula movies, "sexy" vampires etc. etc. You'll need to change your decor accordingly, but the essential thing about this is, BLOOD! (Or at least something that looks like it) All vampires want that ;)
'Future Mad Scientists of America' by
    John "Jay" Glenn
  • Victorian Curiosities / Mad Scientist's Lab - these have been put together because for curiosities and labs you will need specimens in jars, strange looking items, weird and wonderful medical paraphernalia and so on. Obviously for the curiosities theme, it's essential that your table and decor choices are in-keeping with the Victorian era, just as the lab has to have a vaguely inventor/medical experiment feel, but there are actually quite a few variations on each. For example, Victorian circus or Steampunk lab.

  • Creepy Cute - if you like your bloody, padded room-dwelling pyschos mixed with fluffy teddies, polka dots, stripes and large eyes, then creepy cute is a perfect for you! Examples of this style are the paintings/drawings of Junko Mizuno and Mark Ryden, the games 'Plants vs. Zombies', 'MediEvil' and 'Grim Fandango' and 'American McGee's Alice', the series/game 'Gregory Horror Show', Living Dead Dolls and most of Tim Burton's more popular movies. Think pretty pink cakes with gory eyeball decorations, teddy bears with disturbing smiles, bright candies and lollipops scattered in a graveyard, friendly monsters...anything of that kind.

There are, of course, many other theme ideas and there's no reason why you couldn't have a combination tea party, these were just for inspiration. With all of the themes, use a tea, such as pomegranite and raspberry, with a red tinge and serve in horror/skeleton themed cups to bring the whole event together.
