Music: REMNANT

REMNANT
Tokyo electro/gothic/darkwave group, REMNANT,  began in 2009. Original members, Marie (vocals & lyrics) and Takmi (guitar & programming), were active as a two-piece over the next year, before adding a new member, Rober__tJ (narration & performance) in 2010. The band also performed their first live at the 'Machinery Heaven Vol. 9', alongside Vanished Empire, Toxic Strawberry, Gregor Samsa, Sredni Vashtar, Burst Head Lollipop Honey and zwecklos, in December of the same year.

From the dark and eerie 'Sleeping Beauty', to the electro-industrial tinged 'Darkness eve' and fast-paced 'Ceremonie', REMNANT create a horrorific fantasy world, weaved together by Marie's hauntingly innocent voice. The scenes in horror movies, in which lullabies are being sung sweetly to children whilst something malevolent lurks in the shadows, instantly come to mind.

Aa an unsigned band that have only officially been together for around a year and a half, REMNANT have already developed a great sound and have the potential to improve even further in the future. A definite recommendation to anyone who likes melancholic fantasy horror mixed with varying musical genres.

Halloween: The Candy Spooky Theater x SaTaN

Two of my favourite Tokyo horror bands, The Candy Spooky Theater and SaTaN are playing a show together on Halloween! 'Tokyo Horror Fes. Vol. 2' is the follow up to Vol. 1, which was last year in February. The first event, featuring the same two artists, was amazingly fun and both bands were wonderful live, had spooky stageshows and the crowd were very energetic too. Sadly, I won't be in Japan on October 31st, but I definitely recommend going to see this event if you can!

Halloween: Tokyo Dark Castle

Today, we're continuing our 'Things To Do On Halloween' list, with something for those of you in Japan this season. Tokyo Dark Castle is one of Tokyo's best known dark/gothic club events, with live music, DJs and VJs, plus one or two clothing brands or artists usually there as well.  The venue, Shinjuku MARZ, is a little on the small side, but actually it gave the two TDCs that I went to a good atmosphere.

In addition to the main event, there is also a Halloween Parade that starts at 22:30 (10:30pm) outside the CineCity plaza in Kabukichou. Everyone is encouraged to dress up and there's even a prize for best costume! Afterwards, you'll need to make your own way to MARZ for Dark Castle, but don't worry because it's also in the Kabukichou district of Shinjuku so it's not far.

You will need photo ID (passport / driver's liscence etc.) to get into MARZ and it is strictly an 18 plus event.

For line-up and directions to the venue, please check the following sites:

Music: SaTaN

Tokyo horror rock band, SaTaN released their new album, '13 I Scream' at the end of June. I did actually receieve my copy of it from the Starwave Records store the day before the release, which was great, but I haven't gotten around to reviewing it until now.

Anyway! I was already a fan of this band because of their previous releases (a mini-album and 2 singles) and the live performance of theirs that I had the pleasure of attending last year, but I have to say, thanks to this album, I now like them even more. I absolutely LOVE it! The tongue-in-cheek horror lyrics (which are, by the way, entirely in English), driving guitars, crazy vocals and occasional use of spooky synths make this album fantastic! The genre sways between black metal, horror rock and even a little punk, quite frequently and it works very well and creates a style that is both influenced by other artists (for example, older Murderdolls) but remains unique to SaTaN at the same time. Admittedly, with regards to the lyrics, sometimes their English is not perfect, but the meaning of the songs is clear (plus, they've included a Japanese translation of the lyrics, which makes it even clearer what the lyrics are supposed to mean).

I was going to finish by recommending my favourite songs from '13 I Scream', but honestly, I can't choose because every track is great!

Bars & Restaurants: Trick or Treat

Trick or Treat is quite possibly one of my favourite places to eat in the world! With a banquet table, complete with Regan McNeil at the head of it, surrounded by witches, skeletons, wax-dripping candles and other spooky things, it has an amazing atmosphere! And if you don't feel like sitting there, you can always head over to the equally eerie bar area.
The food and drink are good too, and they have an impressive selection, especially for quite a small restaurant. Some of the meat dishes even have horror-esque names and red sauce abound, but unless you have those, your food won't be steeped in horror. It really doesn't matter though, because the surroundings alone are enough!
If you're ever in Tokyo, you NEED to go to this place! (It's probably a good idea to book in advance though)
