Games & Reviews: The Binding of Isaac

Released on Steam last September, and loosely inspired by the Biblical tale of the same name, 'The Binding of Isaac' is an independent 2D game, designed by Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl. A small boy called Isaac lives with his mother on a hill, where they live a simple but happy life. Isaac draws pictures, while his mother watches Christian TV shows. One day, Isaac's mother hears the voice of God, telling her that her son is evil and needs to be cleansed of the corruption around him. So she takes his toys, crayons, and even his clothes away from him in an attempt to purify him.

However, this is apparently not enough, and she hears the voice of God a second time, telling her that Isaac is still a sinner. This time, Isaac's mother locks him in his room, hoping that this will please her Lord. Unfortunately for Isaac, it doesn't, and his mother once again hears the voice of God. He demands that she sacrifice Isaac in order to prove her love and devotion to him, and she agrees to comply immediately. Isaac hears her conversation though, and escapes into the basement just before his mother reaches him. Sadly for Isaac, the basement happens to be full of monsters!

You go through the game as Isaac (or other unlockable characters), making your way through the many rooms of the impressively vast basement, where he is forced to confront all sorts of horrors, both in the present and from his past. Whilst the plot sounds pretty serious and gloomy, it really isn't and the game is full of surprises, dark humour, and the bizarre.

The controls are fairly simple and easy to remember, but are written on the floor of the first room in every chapter, just in case you should forget.

It is honestly an addictive game, especially with the random enemy and terrain generator at work, ensuring that no two play-throughs are the same. Whichever levels you get though, you can be sure that they'll be filled with creepy-crawlies, blood (and other bodily fluids), utterly strange power-ups,  various secrets, and...poop.

Overall, 'The Binding of Isaac' is a fun, quirky game, that doesn't take itself too seriously and provides hours of entertainment. In addition to the gameplay being enjoyable, the music, written by Danny Baranowsky, is also fantastic and sets the mood of each area wonderfully. It's surprising, especially considering that the game only costs  £3.99 (or £4.98 if you buy it together with the soundtrack). Well worth it!

Magazines: Shock Horror

'Shock Horror' is a new, bi-monthly magazine featuring all things horror! With movie and game reviews, interviews, articles, tattoo showcases from Haunted Tattoos, comics and more, it makes for a great read at a reasonable price (3 pounds). They also listen to reader feedback and try to improve their content based upon it, which should mean that the content will develop and change over the issues. Personally I loved their features on Vincent Price and Christopher Lee, as well as the tattoos section. The reviews were also quite varied, and the inclusion of video games, books and music means that there's something for everyone.

However, I do hope that Shock Horror doesn't become another "let's have a bunch of naked women (or indeed, men) to sell more copies" kind of magazine. I love scream queens and zombie pin-ups as much as the next person, and obviously they should have a place in the magazine too, but for me, that's not what the main focus should be. Luckily enough, so far it isn't!

The magazine is available in various UK stores and also internationally through the 'Shock Horror' website. Both Erinia (in Spain) and myself (in the UK) have ordered both issues from there and the delivery was very quick and we didn't have any problems. For issue three, they're also asking for pictures of readers' Halloween costumes at the moment, so hurry over there and you could see yourself in print!

Games: Amnesia: The Dark Decent

Concocted and released today by Frictional Games, 'Amnesia: The dark decent' is not a game for the faint of heart. Those used to having the trusty shotgun and rocket launcher to deal with whatever denizens may come your way, will be disturbed by the fact that the only option for survival in this claustrophobic horror game is to run and hide!

"The last remaining memories fade away into darkness. Your mind is a mess and only a feeling of being hunted remains. You must escape."

Movies: Manhater

"A vulnerable woman, years of cheating boyfriends and finally an abusive husband--a perfect setup for revenge. But what if you're too beaten down to take things into your own hands? What if you just want out, just want it all to stop, just want them all to go away...and then what if it happens?"
Directed by Anthony Doublin and written and produced by Philip R. Calderone of Canyon Falls Productions, independant movie, 'Manhater' takes the traditional downtrodden woman revenge story and gives it an unusual twist, with the introduction of Enyo, a character brought into the plot through the use of a witch's potion.

Although there are similarities between 'Manhater' and the soon to be released 'Jennifer's Body', the storyline of 'Manhater' appeals more to me, if only because it's not set in a high school, as so many modern horror movies are. It also deals with more adult themes, such as domestic violence, which makes it more interesting to me than watching a possessed cheerleader killing boys (although, that is somewhat amusing XD).
