Art & Design: Joe Dragt

Circuit board oil painting, 'Blue Tooth'
Arizona based artist and designer, Joe Dragt, has recently attracted a lot of attention with his circuit board paintings series. However, with years of professional design experience, and a natural creative talent, his work is much more varied.

Dragt began drawing as a child and continued to develop his skills throughout his educational career, though he never had any formal training in traditional art. After deciding to focus on design as a career, he studied commercial art/design at college, eventually gaining his 'Associates of Arts degree in Visual Communication' from Al Collins Graphic Design School (now Collins College) in 2000. After graduating, Dragt worked as a professional designer, creating websites, logos and art for clients, and his own art had become more of a hobby, through which to express himself.

Pastel, 'Heart on Sleeve'
However, recently, Dragt has begun to concentrate on being an artist again, rather than working on commercial projects for others, and the unusual circuit board series has helped to bring worldwide attention to his work over the past year. His distinctive combination of well-executed, macabre art and original presentation methods make his art memorable and stand out from other dark and anatomical pieces.

Even the titles chosen are deliberate and add something to the work. For example, 'Heart on Sleeve' is an anatomical drawing, with the metaphorical title being shown literally. Without the title, the piece would still be intriguing, but would probably convey an entirely different feeling to the viewer. That though, is part of the appeal of Dragt's work; his ability to take familiar subjects/items and provide a fresh perspective of them, in order to create something unusual and new.

Is the ball fancy dress?
"We would like all of our guests to arrive in either fancy dress or black tie, there is a list of costume suppliers on our website to help you. We will also be selling masks on the night. We would ask our guests to remain tasteful, and the use of fake blood to be restricted, due to the carpets and walls of the venue. We will have a team of make up artists at the venue to make up the guests, or if you are bringing a large group we can arrange for the team to come to your offices before hand and do the make up."

The ball itself looks like it will be wonderful and the extra of getting into 'Phobophobia' as well is great! Although I've never visited when they've been running 'Phobophobia' (this year it's running 17th Oct - 1st Nov), The London Tombs (the horror themed part of the London Bridge Experience & Tombs) is really enjoyable, odd and fun at any time of year. If you have the money to attend, Buried Alive seems like it will be a fabulous new edition to the Halloween season and I'm also interested to see what projects The London Bridge Experience Foundation works on in the future.

Movies: Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2011)

The eerie remake of the 1973 television movie 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark' is set to be released on August 26th 2011. The plot centres around Sally Hirst's (Bailee Madison) terrifying experience with creatures that stalk her after she moves into a new house with her father (Guy Pearce) and his girlfriend (Katie Holmes).

The film is co-produced & co-written by Guillermo del Toro and directed by comic book artist / creator of the short film 'Latchkey's Lament', Troy Nixey and, whilst Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce being the adult leads does put me off somewhat, perhaps Nixey can bring out the best in them. The trailers (the one posted below for example) do seem promising,  but I have to admit that a large proportion of my faith in this movie comes from del Toro's involvement in it.

Movies: Dario Argento's Dracula 3D

Whilst reading through an on-set insight into upcoming gothic horror 'Dracula 3D', it occurred to me that I hadn't actually written anything about it being in production yet. So...for those of you that don't know, Dario Argento is currently working on a retelling of 'Dracula', in 3D!

Current scheduled release dates:
Hungary - 2012
Italy - 2012

(More to come I'm sure)

Lead Cast:
Dracula - Thomas Kretschmann
Abraham Van Helsing - Rutger Hauer
Lucy Westenra - Asia Argento
Mina Murray - Marta Gastini
Johnathan Harker - Unax Ugalde

For the aforementioned on-set article, head over to Shock Till You Drop to read Alan Jones' excellent account. It will give you a lot more information than I possibly could!

Whilst I'm intrigued to see what use they make of the stereoscopic 3D technology, to be honest, it's more the combination of Argento and the Dracula legend that makes this project so appealing to me. Although some of his works haven't been stunning, during his career Argento has created some amazing films, which more than make up for the others.

In addition to that, there's the issue of the multitude of 2D versions of 'Dracula' preceding this film. Really though, there are very few vampire storylines that you can't attribute to another source (a game, a novel, a play, another movie etc.) and, in my opinion, it's better to just acknowledge that you're re-doing something and try to make it in a fresh way rather than try to pretend otherwise. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the finished picture is like though.
