Games & Reviews: The Binding of Isaac

Released on Steam last September, and loosely inspired by the Biblical tale of the same name, 'The Binding of Isaac' is an independent 2D game, designed by Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl. A small boy called Isaac lives with his mother on a hill, where they live a simple but happy life. Isaac draws pictures, while his mother watches Christian TV shows. One day, Isaac's mother hears the voice of God, telling her that her son is evil and needs to be cleansed of the corruption around him. So she takes his toys, crayons, and even his clothes away from him in an attempt to purify him.

However, this is apparently not enough, and she hears the voice of God a second time, telling her that Isaac is still a sinner. This time, Isaac's mother locks him in his room, hoping that this will please her Lord. Unfortunately for Isaac, it doesn't, and his mother once again hears the voice of God. He demands that she sacrifice Isaac in order to prove her love and devotion to him, and she agrees to comply immediately. Isaac hears her conversation though, and escapes into the basement just before his mother reaches him. Sadly for Isaac, the basement happens to be full of monsters!

You go through the game as Isaac (or other unlockable characters), making your way through the many rooms of the impressively vast basement, where he is forced to confront all sorts of horrors, both in the present and from his past. Whilst the plot sounds pretty serious and gloomy, it really isn't and the game is full of surprises, dark humour, and the bizarre.

The controls are fairly simple and easy to remember, but are written on the floor of the first room in every chapter, just in case you should forget.

It is honestly an addictive game, especially with the random enemy and terrain generator at work, ensuring that no two play-throughs are the same. Whichever levels you get though, you can be sure that they'll be filled with creepy-crawlies, blood (and other bodily fluids), utterly strange power-ups,  various secrets, and...poop.

Overall, 'The Binding of Isaac' is a fun, quirky game, that doesn't take itself too seriously and provides hours of entertainment. In addition to the gameplay being enjoyable, the music, written by Danny Baranowsky, is also fantastic and sets the mood of each area wonderfully. It's surprising, especially considering that the game only costs  £3.99 (or £4.98 if you buy it together with the soundtrack). Well worth it!

Creepy Christmas: Killing Floor Twisted Christmas

Originally released in 2009, first person co-op survival horror game 'Killing Floor' is having a Twisted Christmas event from December 14th 2010 - January 4th 2011. The event consists of a new map - Santa's Evil Lair - and they've also doubled the number of achievements available to almost 130, including 13 Christmas ones. By completing all 13, you can also unlock the playable character, Baddest Santa.

Baddest Santa

Jack Frost
Just to make it extra festively bizarre, they've changed all the enemy characters into not-so-jolly Christmas-themed attackers. Gorefasts, become Gingerfast, Fleshpounds become Nutpound (complete with Nutcracker Suite theme music), Crawlers become Rudolph the Red-Nosed Crawlers and there's Mrs. Claws, Jack Frost, Elves and Santa's Little Helper amongst other holiday horrors too!

Gingerfast
As a special bonus, those of you own both Team Fortress 2 and Killing Floor, will get a playable red or blue Pyro character, done in the art style of Killing Floor. Also, everyone that owns Team Fortress 2 and either already owns or purchases Killing Floor before the end of the event will recieve Mr Foster's Gas Mask and Tie, which is equippable on the Pyro character.

Games: New Left 4 Dead Missions and Comic!

The game Left for Dead has been around for a while, and has been a firm favourite of mine, as it involves three things that always seem to equal fun: Chainsaws. Zombies. Blood. The stylings of this game helps to set a fun b-movie atmosphere as you team up with 3 other players against an unending horde of zombies!

In this photo "The Sacrifice" appears to be a zombie!!! (of course)

"Welcome to the first chapter in our four-part Left 4 Dead comic, the Sacrifice! Find out what happens after the military rescued Francis, Louis, Zoey, and Bill at the end of the original Left 4 Dead in four weekly installments, each a whopping 40-plus pages of story and art. Then, download the new DLC “The Sacrifice”, where we put the story’s conclusion into your hands."
For those who don't know it (you would have to have been hiding in your zompocalypse fallout shelter not to) there is a new mission pack coming on the 5th October, well in time for halloween. But first there has been a online comic book released to help set the mood!

More details about this and "the Sacrifice" campaign after the jump!
